Product Information

What are the ingredients used to make Susan James Fragrances?

Our fragrances are crafted using a blend of essential oils, absolutes, CO2 extracts, concretes, resins, tinctures, and man-made molecules. Each component is carefully selected to create the perfect balance and harmony in our scents.

Where is it made?

Our fragrances are proudly handcrafted in Los Angeles, ensuring each bottle is a unique.

Are your products considered vegan?

Yes, all our products are vegan and cruelty-free.

Are they tested on animals? We never test on animals. Our commitment to animal welfare is unwavering.

Is Susan James Fragrances made with phthalates?

No, our fragrances are free from phthalates. We prioritize the safety and well-being of our customers.

Are Susan James Fragrances ingredients organic?

We use both organic and wild-harvested essential oils to deliver the highest quality and most natural ingredients possible.

Are Susan James Fragrances natural?

While we pride ourselves on incorporating natural botanical materials, we also use man-made molecules to ensure product safety. Some essential oils can be toxic and/or sensitizing on the skin, because of the chemicals within the oil. Our formulations strike the perfect balance between nature and science, while being longer lasting than natural materials are able to.

Are your fragrances gender fluid?

Our fragrances are thoughtfully designed to be unisex, created without adhering to gender-specific norms. We believe that the essence of a plant or molecule is not limited to a particular gender. Fragrance is a personal expression, and there are no boundaries when it comes to what brings you happiness and confidence. If you love it, wear it!

Can Susan James Fragrances expire?

Our fragrances are in an alcohol solution, so they won't technically expire, but the scent may change over time due to oxidation. Store your perfume in a cool, dark place to preserve its integrity for as long as possible.

How are your products made?

All Susan James Fragrances are composed and formulated by our expert perfumers, then made into small batches that rest for about a month or so depending on the materials used in the formula. The “oil” is diluted in either natural alcohol or fractionated coconut oil (unscented) and stored in a cool place before being filtered if the finished fragrance is to be used with an atomizer. Each bottle is meticulously crafted by hand.

What is the strength of your fragrances?

All our fragrances (unless stated in the individual listing) are Eau De Parfum strength. This is a concentration of aromatic compounds such as essential oils and man-made molecules of more than 12% in the finished product. Fragrances with a higher concentration of aromatics will last longer and be more concentrated than, for instance, a Cologne, which is around 5% fragrance materials.

How long will my fragrance last?

Because our fragrances are Eau De Parfum strength/concentration, they will age well and keep for years. Think of your bottle as a good wine. The notes will change slightly over time; however, due to us ensuring to rest all blends for more than a month, it will not change a great deal if kept under the right conditions. Keep your fragrance away from heat and sunlight.

What are the top, middle, and base notes of a fragrance?

Fragrances are typically composed of three types of notes: top, middle, and base. Top notes are the initial scents you smell when you first apply the fragrance, and they typically last for 15-30 minutes. Middle notes, also called heart notes, are the main body of the fragrance and usually last for several hours. Base notes are the foundation of the fragrance and are typically the longest-lasting, lasting for several hours to a full day.

What is the difference between Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette?

The main difference between Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette is their concentration of fragrance oils. Eau de Parfum contains a higher concentration of fragrance oils (typically between 15-20%), while Eau de Toilette contains a lower concentration (usually around 5-15%). This means that Eau de Parfum will last longer and have a stronger scent than Eau de Toilette.

Usage & Application

How much or how long should I spray?

We recommend 2-3 sprays, allowing you to adjust based on your personal preference.

How far away from my body should I spray for the best results?

For optimal results, spray at least 8 inches away from your body, avoiding the face.

Can I spray perfume on my hair?

Yes, spraying perfume on your hair is a great option! It can help the fragrance last longer and won't stain your wedding attire. Just be sure to spray from a distance to avoid over-saturating your hair.

Can I layer Susan James Fragrances?

Yes, our fragrances are designed to be layered for a unique olfactory experience. Experiment with combining different scents to create your signature blend or enhance the longevity and complexity of a single fragrance. Start by applying a base fragrance and layering with complementary top notes or accords for a personalized scent that evolves throughout the day.

Can fragrances affect my mood?

Yes, fragrances can affect your mood. Certain scents can have calming or uplifting effects, while others can stimulate or invigorate. For example, lavender is known for its calming effects, while citrus scents can help to uplift and energize. It's important to choose a fragrance that makes you feel good and matches your mood or the occasion.

Where are the best places to apply perfume for a bride?

For a lasting impression, apply your fragrance on your pulse points such as your wrists, neck, behind your ears, and the inside of your elbows. These areas emit heat, which can help diffuse and amplify the scent throughout the day.

How can I make my fragrance last longer on my wedding day?

To make your fragrance last longer, apply an unscented lotion or petroleum jelly to your pulse points before spraying your perfume. The moisture helps lock in the scent. Additionally, consider carrying a small travel-sized bottle of your perfume for touch-ups throughout the day. If you have any left from your Discovery Set or just ask Susan, she would be happy to add a complementary sample of your wedding perfume with your package.

Can I layer my fragrance with other scented products?

Yes, you can layer your fragrance with complementary scented body lotions, oils, or powders to enhance the overall scent experience. Just make sure the products are from the same fragrance family to avoid clashing scents.

If I use it as a body spray, will it stain my clothing?

We recommend performing a patch test first, as some essential oils and resins may leave dark spots on clothing. Especially white wedding dresses! We do not use any artificial colorants in our wedding perfumes, however we use resins and absolutes that may stain clothing.

How should I store my fragrance?

All fragrances are best kept out of sunlight and in a cool dark place with the bottle standing up. Please be careful when transporting your purchase in areas that are particularly warm. Your fragrance may expand and lose the scent of precious top notes as they have a much lower boiling point than, for example, musk

Skin Testing

Why is skin testing important?

Skin testing is important to ensure you don't have any allergic reactions or sensitivities to the ingredients in the fragrance. Even natural ingredients can occasionally cause reactions on sensitive skin.

How do I perform a skin test?

Apply a small amount of the fragrance to a discrete area of your skin, such as the inside of your wrist or elbow. Wait for 24 hours, monitoring the area for any adverse reactions such as redness, itching, or swelling. If no reaction occurs, you can confidently use the fragrance on your skin as directed.

What is IFRA and how does it relate to sensitive skin?

The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) sets safety standards for fragrance ingredients to ensure that products are safe for consumer use. All our formulations stay within IFRA 49th guidelines, which means they have been formulated to minimize potential skin irritations and sensitivities. While we adhere to these safety standards, individual reactions can still occur, making skin testing an important step for those with sensitive skin.

What should I do if I have a reaction?

If you experience any redness, itching, or swelling after applying the fragrance, wash the area thoroughly with mild soap and water. Discontinue use and consult your healthcare provider for further advice. If you have known sensitivities, it's always a good idea to consult with a dermatologist before using new products.

Are Susan James Fragrances suitable for sensitive skin?

While our fragrances are formulated to be gentle on the skin, individuals with sensitive skin may still experience reactions to certain ingredients. We recommend conducting a patch test before applying the fragrance to ensure compatibility with your skin type. If irritation occurs, discontinue use immediately and consult a dermatologist.
